Devlog #2 - Prepare Yourselves



Hello ! Here we are with a new devlog. In today’s episode we’ll talk about NPCs, the improvements of the fighting system and the localization. With the upcoming update, we migrated to Unreal Engine 4.26, bringing new features for us to use.

AI REWORK

AI EQS

With this update, you’ll meet humanoids opponents. We started reworking AIs. We implemented the EQS (Environment Query System) backend system. EQS is a feature of Unreal Engine used to create complex AI movement.

We also started to implement a squad system for all our future AI. It’ll allow us to make them communicate with each other and make them more coordinated. It’s especially important for humanoid NPCs. For the moment, this system is not as developed as we wished, but it’s a good start.


FIGHTING SYSTEM

NPC Fight

We improved some aspects of the fighting system. Starting with the lock ability, we made it more precise and with a smoother rotation. You can now switch between enemies ! To help to make the camera smoother in fight, we added a camera lag. It creates a little delay on the camera movement when it follows the player character.

We completely changed the blocking system. Before, we had to hold the block button down, and it blocked all the hits (think of a shield). Now, when you press the block button, it will parry attacks in a short frame of time. When you parry an enemy, it stuns him a little, use this time to counter-attack ! It feels a lot more like a parry with a sword, and will make the game more dynamic.


LOCALIZATION

Localization

Starting from this update, the game will be translated in french and english. Enjoy our non-english speakers testers (you can’t read this anyway) !
